"We are a country to which immigrants have been welcomed throughout history. With that immigration comes cultural diversity, acceptance of foreign traditions and an abundance of spoken languages. As Americans we understand these differences and we have historically embraced them. Yet, immigrants come here knowing that the language of the United States is English and that in order to function without our society, English must be spoken. English is not our second language; it is our country's language. Therefore, it is the only language that should be used for instruction in our public schools. The research will demonstrate that bilingual education serves to segregate our citizens instead of unifying our nation. Bilingual education decreases the educational funding dollar by providing only a small segment of the population a special educational service."
