This paper argues that the Internet is not a cause of alienation or of social transformation, but a medium like any other that emphasizes gaps between social classes. The so-called global village involves a concentration of education, well to do Americans and other Westerners with access, as opposed to millions more without any access at all. One result is a different Internet-consciousness that tends to leave under-privileged groups behind.
