Paper Summary:
The paper explores whether the death penalty serves as a punishment or whether it is an 'eye for an eye' approach of vengeance. The paper looks at the positions for and against using the death penalty. The paper advocates using the death penalty with strict, uniform regulations that will limit the possible wrongful prosecution of the innocent. The paper concludes that being for or against the death penalty is a personal and often a moral decision.
From the Paper:
"The use of death penalty has changed from its start in early times when the defendant was found guilty and the same day or shortly after was put to death by firing squad, hanging, or beheading. Society believes that some crimes need the most extreme punishment in which the offender would never be able to commit another crime. The problem with the death penalty is that once the punishment is carried out it cannot be changed and the courts cannot release the defendant from his or her sentence; it is permanent, if the defendant was later found innocent it is too late to correct the mistake."
