Paper Summary:
This paper examines the spread of democracy worldwide, often as a result of intervention on behalf of another democratic nation. The paper asserts that the idea of democracy, although a modern standard in Western countries, is a relatively recent global development. The paper maintains that this imposition of democracy is not only feasible, but also necessary. Moreover, the paper holds that democracy is the best form of government, with various forms to suit and benefit various societies. The paper concludes that, although it may not always be a smooth transition, imposed democratization is possible, and vital to the well-being of not only the target nation, but also the entire world.
From the Paper:
"It is a fallacy to suggest that the rule of law or protection of civil rights is unacceptable in different regions due to various beliefs, customs, and etcetera. Often times, this is merely an argument used by those currently in power to prevent democratization and allow them to continue being in power. But, by allowing for a democracy would still allow such leaders to participate in the government, including running for election, if they so pleased. Because democracy allows for much freedom politically, it allows even illiberal parties, which may have tried to previously seize power unjustly, just as much opportunity to stand for election as any other group."
