1,871 words (approx. 7.5 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the issues concerning abortion and argues against abortion. The author takes a pro-life view and discusses the effects and implications of abortion on the parents and others involved. The paper also describes the methods of abortion and the consequences as well as alternatives to abortion. The paper includes an annotated bibliography.

From the Paper:

"Consequences are inevitable in life; they are the undeniable result of actions, good or bad, that reflect on the past decisions made. In doing so, consequences serve as a physical manifestation of such decisions, resulting in the need for action to address the consequences; to counteract or affirm the results from the initial decision. Unwanted pregnancy is one such consequence of a decision to have sex, often unprotected, which results in an almost frenzy for the new parents. Many sexually active couples do not realize or understand the reality of the consequences at hand, and are often unequipped to deal with the pregnancy resulting from their passionate encounter. To many, abortion is the counteracting agent to the unwanted pregnancy; it offers a quick solution to their life-changing "problem". "About half of the approximately 5.4 million pregnancies occurring in the U.S. each year are unexpected. Almost 1.4 million of these unintended pregnancies end in abortions" (Abortion in the US). Although many consider abortion a medical topic concerning a woman's body and her reproductive system, due to the dynamic impact upon the public, abortion has proven to be an incredibly tumultuous political debate in the United States. It is obviously impossible to keep personal feelings out of the issue, and therefore one's choice in the matter, whether "Pro-Choice" or "Pro-Life," depends on their direct experience with and feelings on the issue. Though abortions prove to be a very common procedure, there are, however, numerous options for expecting and unwanted mothers that do not have such drastic repercussions on her physical and emotional health. Therefore, the policy adopted in this paper is a Pro-Life stance, as there are numerous options for expectant couples that do not result in the abortion-related negative effects."
