1,575 words (approx. 6.3 pages) | 4 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the life and work of Yukio Mishima, a larger than life character whose writing made him almost instantly famous and whose bizarre death assured that people will be discussing his place in history for generations. Mishima remains nevertheless a difficult writer to place within an overall literary movement or context. The paper discusses how part of this difficulty arises from the sheer volume of material that Mishima published in his lifetime. He wrote plays for the No Theater, the Kabuki, the Bunraku Puppets, and the modern theater; he also wrote twenty novels, numerous short articles around the world, and scripts for a number of films. Altogether, Mishima is credited with approximately two hundred and fifty separate works. Spanning heroic No dramas, to works of science fiction, and idyllic novels, Mishima cannot properly be pinpointed within a single literary movement or genre, nor can he be excluded from them.
