Youth Violence and the Social Sciences

# 133408
An exploration of youth violence in terms of three different social science perspectives.
1,000 words (approx. 4 pages) | 3 sources | APA | 2007 | United States
Published on: Jan 01, 2007

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses youth violence in terms of three different social science perspectives: cultural anthropology (ethnography), psychology, and sociology. Some brief discussion of studies of the youth violence phenomenon and of the Gulbenkian Commission is also included. The paper draws the conclusion that while the commision makes valid points, their proposed changes would not benefit the social sciences.

From the Paper:

"A great deal of media attention has been given to youth violence in the past few decades. From the romanticized perspectives on the "punks" and gangs of the 1950s in the characters of James Dean and West Side Story, to the Columbine school shootings and beyond, the violent youth has never been far from the public eye. Despite this relatively recent attention, the violent youth is not a new creation. Long before the Sharks and the Jets danced their way across stage, violent youths were part of the human condition. This paper will examine violent youths using several perspectives."
