Paper Summary:
This paper explains that, even though there are opposing views of Winston Churchill, the author believes that he was an opportunist, who never shied away from danger and never believed that being loyal and honest was the only way to succeed in politics. Next, the author reviews Churchill's parents and his upbringing, especially his relationship with his mother. The paper examines his career as a writer, as a soldier and as an enigmatic politician, who served under six labels during his time in Parliament.
From the Paper:
"Jennie Churchill was an American and gave her son all that American ideals had to offer: ambition, drive, and perhaps a small sense of entitlement. Lord Randolph Churchill was the younger son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough and endowed upon his son some of his own standards: strength, gifted oration, and of course a sense of entitlement as well. Lord Randolph's political career was, "meteoric, turbulent, and punctuated by spectacular rows." Some do not think that Winston took after his father in too many ways in the political arena, but others would say they were very much alike. Their policies were similar in certain key areas, but are not relevant to my main points. Winston did learn from some of his father's mistakes and was able to avoid overplaying his hand too much and avoided having his departure from politics tarnished by a called bluff. Jennie instilled in Winston, "energy, a love of adventure, ambition, a sinuous intellect, warm feelings, courage and resilience, and a huge passion for life in all its aspects." Perhaps his biggest influence in his childhood was his nurse, Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Everest. She nurtured him and listened to him in ways his parents were unable, whether by choice or circumstance, and saw his potential long before his parents did."
