Paper Summary:

The paper describes the social position of the character of Emily Grierson in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" and her relationship with her father. The paper attempts to explain how Emily's status and postion lead her to become so desperate emotionally that she is willing to kill a man in order to secure his contact.

From the Paper:

"Emily Grierson, the main character from William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," is an example of the haughty and untouchable stereotype of the southern belle early in her life. The townspeople did not send their children to her with boxes of color and tedious brushes and pictures cut from the ladies' magazines because the front door closed upon the last one and remained closed for good. Faulkner uses flashbacks as the townspeople attempted to reconstruct an accurate picture of Miss Emily's actions starting with her death, explaining a lady of such noble birth, and her desperate private action to have someone to love."
