Who Rules Society?

This paper is an analysis of the style and content of three scholarly articles about who controls society. The author points out that these article are by writers with very different approaches, from different time periods and have different viewpoints on the issue. The paper discusses the each author's main concern, the way the writer presents his or her points and methodology.

"Reading these three articles, written on seemingly different topics and from extremely diverse perspectives, we are given a well-rounded picture of the forces that define and rule society in the modern world, starting several hundred years ago (in Gramsci's article) and ending today. William A. Johnston's "Class and Politics in the Era of the Global Economy" deals with what many have described as the trend toward neo-conservatism in recent decades. In simplest terms, this represents a swinging of the political pendulum; whereas, thirty years ago, we were experiencing a trend toward the left, labor unions, and expansion of social services and the welfare state, now the opposite is becoming true."
