"When Death Comes"

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the concept of death, according to Oliver's poem, which shows that death is given a palpable life, a contradiction in itself. The coming of death is described in several different ways evoking a number of things that the individual would be likely to shun if given a choice.

"The poet indeed evokes life several times as she wonders about death. As she veers toward death, she thinks more and more about life. She wants to step through the door of curiosity, but her concern appears to be less satisfying her curiosity than fear of losing what she has experienced in life. She says at the end, "I don't want to end up simply having visited this world," yet she seems earlier to be interested in visiting the world of the dead and returning to this world. Since that is not possible, she is concerned about what will be lost."
