Using biographical as well as historical criticism, this essay examines the dystopia in Zamyatin's novel "We." The essay describes the novel as a logical conclusion to a totalitarian regime, and details the various ways the "United State" controls the individual.
From the Paper:
"That Zamyatin should write such a book is certainly not a surprise considering his own personal history as someone who consistently chose to stand outside the power structure. He was a Bolshevik before the Revolution, but after the Bolsheviks came to power he distanced himself from the party. In the years after the Revolution his literate but bitingly ironic criticism of the literary politics of State poetry kept him out of official favor: a fact that we see hinted at in the fourth paragraph of his novel: 'Whoever feels capable must consider it his duty to write treatises, poems, manifestos, odes, and other compositions on the greatness and beauty of the United State (p. 3).' We know that the author of this book was never someone who could do so."
