This paper discusses the events of the Watergate scandal and how they affected Nixon, his successors and the American public. "On June 17, 1972, Richard Nixon, the President of the United States, authorized federal agents, including the Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Central Intelligence Agency to break into the Watergate Hotel. These intrusions were in an attempt to recover political records of the Democratic Party. President Nixon was engaged in a hotly contested electoral campaign for his re-election. President Nixon believed that incriminating evidence that was harmful to the Democratic Party (and helpful to his own election efforts) would be found."
