Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway"

Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway"
An essay discussing Virgina Woolf's view of the city as conveyed in her work, "Mrs. Dalloway".
1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 5 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This essay argues that, in "Mrs. Dalloway", Woolf argues that cities are actually very nice environments that preserve legacies, are full of life and combine things in very diverse ways. This is the opposite of many other writers who convey a very different opinion of the city.

From the Paper:

"City and country landscapes are very popular topics for writers and philosophers. Since at least the 18th Century there has been dialectic between the city and the country in the popular imagination of Western countries. The country was usually portrayed as a place of peace, tranquility and beauty. For example, in Nature's Economy Donald Worster discusses the "Arcadian" view of nature championed by Gilbert White in 17th Century England. According to Worster, This Arcadian view advocated a simple, humble life for man with the aim of restoring him to a peaceful coexistence with other organisms."
