750 words (approx. 3 pages) | 0 sources | 2003 United States

Paper Summary:

"Taking Sides" is a book that contains several clashing views on various sociological issues presented in the form of articles. This paper reviews two of these articles, one by Christopher Jencks, and the other by Christopher deMuth. While Jencks states how he believes that economic inequality is a huge problem in the U.S., Christopher C. DeMuth argues that it is not.

From the Paper:

"DeMuth agrees that there has been an increase in economic inequality in the U.S. But he argues that "it is a very small tick in the massive and unprecedented leveling of material circumstances that has been proceeding now for almost three centuries and in this century has accelerated dramatically." He also claims that because of the progress of agriculture, construction, and manufacturing, housing, clothing, and food is now available to basically everyone."
