2,636 words (approx. 10.5 pages) | 11 sources | MLA | 2010 | United States
Published on: Dec 25, 2010

Paper Summary:

The paper provides the general background behind the conflict in Afghanistan, from the period of the Cold war up to the US invasion of Afghanistan in order to destroy the political regime of the Taliban. The paper focuses on how the events of 9/11 changed the way in which failed states and terrorist states are perceived and their importance in the terrorist chain. The paper then looks at the theory of pre emptive wars used from 2001 onwards. The paper reaches the conclusion that it is essential for troops to be redeployed in Afghanistan in order to ensure that the 2001 war in the country was a positive and not useless deployment of troops.

From the Paper:

"The presidential elections from 2008 represent one of the most important changes in the perspective of the American foreign policy. Similar to any political regime change they demonstrated the reversal of the foreign policy approach in the lines of the doctrinarian change. The reconsideration of the way in which the United States would conduct wars during the Obama administration was an obvious, expected, and voted for change. However, what remains to be seen is the actual setting in motion of the plans the administration has in the context of the wider international scene which includes the effects and the measures needed to counter the international economic crisis as well as the skepticism the US is facing on the political scene."
