"Carter's purpose is to describe the political events of his first campaign for public office in the state of Georgia. This was the first of Carter's political battles and a turning point in his career. Carter could have given in to the politics at this point and ended his political career. Instead, Carter won the battle for the seat of Georgia and went on to become the President. Carter describes how he fought against the powerful men of Georgia to maintain his seat, despite the political battle this turned out to be. Carter's main purpose is not so much to describe his own battle, but to reveal the political environment at the time. Carter is effective in this purpose, describing a political system that the reader sees as corrupt and hindering those who want to be in politics for the good of the people."
