Tourette's Syndrome
An analysis of the diagnosis, causes and treatment for Tourette's syndrome.
1,397 words (approx. 5.6 pages) | 7 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses Tourette syndrome. It describes the diagnosis and symptoms of the disease, as well as the differential diagnosis. The paper also looks at the causes of Tourette syndrome, although the precise causes remain unknown. The paper then discusses the medication or therapy that can be used to control the symptoms of Tourette syndrome, as there is no cure.

From the Paper:

"Currently there is much research being done in hopes of finding the causes, and subsequently, a cure for Tourette syndrome. Several organizations including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Center for Research Resources are supporting and conducting research on the nervous system and Tourette syndrome (U.S. 7). The major areas of study are genetic studies, neurotransmitter studies, and environmental studies. Genetic studies involve conducting tests and researching large multigenerational families with the disorder in an attempt to establish the chromosomal location of the gene that causes Tourette syndrome. In neurotransmitter research, certain neurotransmitters are studied to discover their role in causing the symptoms of the syndrome. Environmental studies are longitudinal studies conducted by observing and analyzing young children who are at a high risk for Tourette syndrome in order to identify any outside factors, such as stress or medications, which might influence the expression of the disorder (Bruun 17)."
