This paper looks at how Nobel Prize winner, Toni Morrison, a woman who has written many books on the realities of African-American life, is long-standing on the American Library Association (ALA) list of challenged books and literary works that individuals or groups wish to see removed from the shelves of schools because of her inclusion of sexually explicit copy, racism descriptions, and language.
From the Paper:
"Carol Iannone, an educator and editor, wrote a mixed review: "The strengths of The Bluest Eye purity of language, economy of structure, strong narrative voice, and a sensitive yet surgical delineation of some of the miseries of black life in some measure make up for the weaknesses, which include an insistence on an ethic of total victimization and a sometimes relentless pathos." She adds: "But the virtues cannot overcome the flaws in the novel's vision." Iannone criticizes Morrison for manipulating the assignment of judgment and blame and not going beyond black and white categories of good and evil."
