Paper Summary:

This paper explains that the themes of love, alienation, and estrangement, which are present in literature throughout time, are symptomatic of the modern condition of human existence and represent an inability to figure out the meaning of human existence within a constantly changing world. The author points out that, in Joseph Conrad's novel, "Heart of Darkness," Kurtz maintains two "loving" relationships, one with his fiancee and one with his mistress in Africa. The paper relates that the relationships in Virginia Woolf's novel, "Mrs. Dalloway," weave a tangled web; Clarissa Dalloway, the heroine, is afraid she has sacrificed passion and true love in the name of stability and security and the maintenance of an upper-class lifestyle.

From the Paper:

"He leaves behind a woman, his intended, when he ventures out into the Congo. She is under the impression that he is going because he wants to become rich in the ivory industry so that he can marry and support her. She loves him wholeheartedly and suffers the pain of his absence because she believes that they are truly, madly, deeply in love and share an unbreakable bond and that he will come back to her one day so they can be married, and live happily ever after. Kurtz actually leaves because he feels he needs to find himself and to figure out if he really should marry her."
