The aforementioned look at the texts as if they were some form of a dream, meaning that the text hides, represses its real contents behind manifest content. "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is often read in this manner. The story is rich with material for psychoanalytic analysis, however this paper focuses on the way in which Gilman sees herself, as evidenced by the way in which she speaks about herself.

"Perhaps she is trying to communicate the idea that it is cowardess on the part of women that keep them in their place. To be sure, being a single woman in that age was far from ideal. A single woman had no steady source of income and no one to provide for her; she was looked upon as a failure. She failed at being a woman because she had no husband and no children. At least a widow was pitied, but a woman who never married, what place had she in such a society?"
