↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

A review of Reich's book which looks forward to the next century and to the economic conditions Reich sees as in force then, based in part on the state of the economy at the time he wrote the book and in part on his analysis of changes taking place, changes to come, and likely social, economic, and political forces operating in the world today. It examines how the book gives a good account of the state of the economy and points to a number of possible forces that might change the economic conditions. Reich also offers good advice as to how to help mold the future economy rather than merely being subject to its vagaries.

From the Paper:

"Reich sees a major shift coming in the way we view the economy, a shift away from the prevailing and long-standing national economic vision to a global economic vision. What will remain rooted within the national borders are the people comprising a nation, and the primary assets of a country will be its citizens skills and insights. Each nation will be faced with the need to cope with the centrifugal forces of the global economy, and borders will become more meaningless. This is largely what has been taking place. Borders are not exactly meaningless, but we have seen more regional economic agreements and alliances in the manner of the European Union which try to reduce the barriers borders have always been and which try to spread the risk so that the goods of each country become part of the exports for the whole region."
