The War on Crime

Paper Summary:

This paper reviews whether or not the war on terror has helped or hindered the war on organized crime. The paper looks briefly at the increased powers granted to authorities, courtesy of the Patriot Act as they fight against home grown terrorism. The paper then examines whether or not this expansion of investigatory power has found its way into the hands of authorities targeting organized crime.

From the Paper:

"After September 11, 2001, America became a very different land. For one thing, the traditional belief that the country was insulated against the brutality and terror found in other parts of the world gave way to the reality that it was not. More importantly, law enforcement in America changed, also as the Patriot Act gave police services and government agencies wider power than previously to monitor the communications and records of private citizens. With this in mind, the following paper will look at whether or not the war on terror has had a positive "spill-over" effect upon the war against organized crime."
