This examines Owen Wister's novel, "The Virginian", in which the nature of good and evil on the Western frontier was explored through an examination of the influence that courage, background, physical appearance, women, integrity, community, individualism and the wilderness had on forming character. In this 1902 novel, author Owen Wister established the gender stereotypes for the good-looking cowboy hero, the schoolmarm heroine, and the evil, seedy-looking cattle-rustler, among other good and evil frontier characters.
