This paper examines crime and terrorism, motivations and the reasons an individual becomes a member of a terrorist agency such as the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), originally led by brothers Fidel Castano and Carlos Castano. The paper specifically focuses on AUC, relating its organizational history, actions and missions. The writer questions whether knowing the motivations of a terrorist group can assist in counteracting its goals in relationship to the U.S. because the open and free nature of the United States makes it difficult to prevent the terrorists from infiltrating its borders.
From the Paper:
"Culturally, if a person is reared in a home, or born in a country where they were taught to hate and despise a certain race of people, culture, religion, economic status, or society. This is something that is taught in their schools, and they hear and see it on the media. This person will believe what they have been taught to believe all of their lives, many times without even rally understanding the nature of why they should hate this particular entity. Only that it has been passed down from generation to generation."
