The paper shows how in the novel "The Time Machine," H.G. Wells portrays how a harsh capitalistic society would develop if left unchecked; the mistreatment of the primitive working class by society would make them more and more monstrous, while the upper class aristocracy would become morally corrupt by their dependence on consumption and convenience. The paper explains how this novel reflects the author's own concerns about the disparities that were arising in society as a result of the Industrial Revolution.
From the Paper:
"Wells is concerned with a familiar theme for many satirical writers, the exploitation of the working class by the rich. It takes different forms, and each satirical author has a different take on the social impact of industrialization, but they are nonetheless all concerned with social stratification which much satire and social commentary in history based itself upon. In this highly satirical novel, the angle of the worst case scenario is starkly and graphically emphasized by Wells."
