"The Tempest"

"The Tempest"
Discusses concepts of language and power in William Shakespeare's play.
1,150 words (approx. 4.6 pages) | 1 source | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

Although the island of Shakespeare's "Tempest" is far removed from the political machinations of Milan, from where Prospero has fled, we discover that the island is not bereft of the political structure, which existed in the Dukedom. Prospero, in fact, dominates the island in a political manner and has subordinated his daughter, Miranda and the savage, Caliban, to his will. This occurs through the empowering force of language, which becomes a symbol of power in the play.
