This review gives the reader a critical definition of what constitutes southern literature. "The Summons" by John Grisham possesses all the ingredients necessary for inclusion in the annals of southern literary tradition. It is of the writer's opinion that southern writing is much like southern cooking; savory, heavy on the seasonings, and served up in big portions.

"Before delving into a discussion of The Summons, a critical definition of what constitutes southern literature must be first understood. Many believe that the term "Southern" writer can be applied to anyone who has been born in the south. If this were the case then the author of the famous Star Trek series, Gene Roddenberry, would be considered a Southern writer because he was born in El Paso, Texas. (Alexander) Obviously this is too generic of a proposition. This being said, what are the established guidelines for a piece of work to be considered "Southern""Passion is the chief ingredient of good fiction," the great southern writer Eudora Welty once said. (Welty qtd. in Krebs). The characterization presented in Southern literature is unique. The players in a southern novel are portrayed as distinctly human. Their attributes are lauded but their faults are not romanticized."
