The Successful Progressives

The Successful Progressives
A brief analysis of the success of the movement of progressivism.
736 words (approx. 2.9 pages) | 2 sources | MLA | 2004

Paper Summary:

This paper contends that progressivism was never a unified movement and the progressives never really worked for the same objectives. The paper explains that if it is to be viewed as a unitary movement, progressivism must be treated as a very broad, far-reaching and often contradictory development. The paper examines the relevant issues of the time and explores the areas of reform that the progressives influenced.

From the Paper:

" Between approximately 1893 and 1920, many reform movements sprang up across America. From the Populist agrarian farmers to the Progressive inner-city businessmen, citizens were demanding change, reform and improvement. Each individual movement had their own ideas as to just exactly what the appropriate remedies would be, but all felt that at least one was needed. The Farmer's Alliances had many reform goals, from regulation of railroad shipping costs to government management of supply and demand, but they were not particularly successful in coercing any long term improvements. One possible explanation for this could be that rural citizens had a lack of political and societal connections. They did manage to make some of their concerns known and to draw some attention to areas in need of reform."
