"The Souls of Black Folk"

"The Souls of Black Folk"
A review of W.E.B Du Bois's work, "The Souls of Black Folk", on African-American emancipation.
900 words (approx. 3.6 pages) | 1 source | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

W.E.B. Du Bois analyzes the life of African Americans at the turn of the 20th century. He evaluates the experiences of African Americans after the Emancipation Proclamation, showing the wide range of frustrations and roadblocks that they faced. In his focus on education, Du Bois criticizes Booker T. Washington's contemporary rejection of higher education and accommodationist stance toward white racism. More than anything else, Du Bois believed that African Americans would find their own self-consciousness and identity by being able to read and write their own history.
