An analysis of the author's vision in "The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea" by Yukio Mishima.
Written in 2005; 808 words; 1 sources; MLA; $ 28.95
Paper Summary:
This paper examines Yukio Mishima's novel "The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea" and how the mixture of romanticism and brutality expressed a new vision of the world which would lead in time to the author's ritual suicide as a political statement. It discusses how the sailor and the widow represent one arm of reality, a romanticized coming together of opposites and how another aspect of life is represented by her son, a brutal gang leader who is energized in a hellish way by observing the affair between his mother and the sailor.
From the Paper:
"Ryuji, the sailor, has his romantic vision of reality as well, and it also does not fit with the real world in which he lives. He does not have the same ability Noboru has to watch the world from outside, which leaves him more regretful while Noboru sees the world as malleable in his hands, as something he can force into his view of reality. The clash of the real world and the image occurs between the mother's room and the son's, taking place essentially in the peephole through which Noboru observes that particular aspect of reality. The two worlds contrast and clash, leading to violence both direct and threatened."
