1,396 words (approx. 5.6 pages) | 10 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how Jesus Christ has been portrayed in visual art, music, theater and film. The paper notes that, throughout all of mankind's recorded history there has never been anyone who has inspired people in so many ways as Jesus Christ has and that for two thousand and nine years there have been individuals so inspired by this man that they have devoted their entire lives to him. According to the paper, it is no wonder that there have been countless individuals who have used Jesus Christ as the subject of their creative spirit.

From the Paper:

"In the year 313 AD. the Roman Emperor Constantine issued an edict of tolerance for all religions and converted to Christianity himself. This proved to be of immense importance for Christian art because under his imperial sponsorship, architects raised a series of large and opulent churches at key locations in the empire. Old Saint Peters was built upon the spot where it was believed that Peter; Jesus' first apostle had been buried. Examining similar churches from the period gives testimony to its grandeur. A basilica was a long rectangular hall with entrances on the long or short sides. At one or both ends might be a curved section called an apse. In order to admit light, the open center space, called the nave, extended up higher than the surrounding aisles. This upward extension was called the clerestory, and it was pierced with windows called clerestory windows (Getlein 379). The atrium is a large opened space used to gather before services. "
