Written in 2008; 785 words; 3 sources; MLA; $ 27.95
Paper Summary:
In this paper the author discusses medieval kings and attempts to analyze the amount of power they are conceived to have had with the power they actually wielded. The writer likens many medieval kings to present day politicians in that the kings were as susceptible and vulnerable to public opinion as politicians are today. The author concludes that, in reality, medieval kings had far less power than is assumed today and were constrained in their scope of action and ability to "rule absolutely" by popular opinion, army strength, and a powerful upper class. The paper uses MLA style footnotes but does not include a works cited page.
From the Paper:
"Kingship in the medieval time period can often be misperceived as being an all-powerful monarchy. In all actuality, a medieval king could be described as a rather important noble. Without the high influence of a centralized, regicentric government, there was no particular reason as to why the nobles would listen to a claimed king outside of the traditions of legitimacy and gift-giving. This left a medieval king with a limited amount of individual power to wield. There were many different factors that limited a medieval ruler's power, such as opinion of their populace, the strength of their army, and the fact that other nobles were aware of their own power and influence."
