Paper Summary:

The pursuit and nature of truth is the common central theme in "The Nose" by Nikolai Gogol and "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. The paper shows that this theme is demonstrated through a number of sub-themes such as mass hysteria spawning accusation and guilt, and concern for social reputation or position, both of which are also a comment on society.

From the Paper:

"The hysteria in "The Nose" is of a lighter kind. When the story of Kovalyov's nose is spread, gullibility again emerges. People are all eager to see and believe the strange case of the missing nose. The story is decidedly humorous, but it is also a comment similar to that in "The Crucible". Society derives sensation from the problems of others, rather than bothering to pursue the truth."
