The conflict of the story is between Prospero and Death and Poe creatively keeps our attention until the end of the story. Prospero's character is foolish in thinking he can hide from the disease of death. His attitude is selfish in thinking that the "external world can take care of itself" (614). Prospero might have even felt like gloating when his secluded castle remained untouched from the Red Death for at least five or six months."
