This paper explains that the overall theme of Louis Harlan's "Booker T. Washington: The Making of a Black Leader, 1856 ? 1901", is that Washington was an imperfect man who is fundamentally misunderstood by history, even though he did misunderstand, to a certain degree, the history that was transpiring around him. The paper refers to Washington's own autobiography, "Up From Slavery".

"By stressing a life lived in historical context and retrospect, Harlan is able to give a snapshot of the man's popularity, something that is easy to forget in today's more radical day and age. The book's ending with Washington's death in 1915 paints a picture of a man who was, in his era, a powerful voice, who gradually came, after his demise, to be demonized by other Black leaders with the name of Uncle Tom. Perhaps the most infamous phrase of Washington's and the most misunderstood was that African Americans ought to "put down their buckets" while they could, and reap the immediate economic gains of their society, rather than holding out for a promised tomorrow."
