Analytical Essay # 115636 :: The Majesty of Nature in 'Partie de Campagne'
This paper looks at the use of nature in the final scene of Jean Renoir's work "Partie de Campagne".
Written in 2009; 1,113 words; 1 sources; MLA; $ 38.95
Paper Summary:
In this article, the writer discusses that while often a film's backdrop seems secondary to the actions of the characters themselves, throughout 'Partie de Campagne', the characters are actively engaged by their surroundings, and sometimes, it seems, motivated to action by them. The writer maintains that nature is the most powerful determinant in the lives of the characters in this film. It has the power, by its beauty and grandeur, to unite two people simply by manipulating their surroundings, managing to be at once protective and liberating. The writer points out that conversely, the change in weather can symbolize a shift back to reality. The writer concludes that in this case, the sunlight and clear skies of the early afternoon suggest a dream world, while the rain and darkened clouds force the characters to address their real lives.
From the Paper:
"The sequence begins with a medium-long shot of Henriette in Henri's embrace. Accompanied by a grand classical score and the chirping of the birds, the two characters sit amongst the grasses and trees. Her wide eyes focused upward on the nest and the concerned expression on her face paint Henriette as young and innocent. This is reinforced by the manner in which the light and shadows play in the shot. Henriette's upturned face is bathed in sunlight and seems to glow. Meanwhile, Henri's down turned face seems to be occupied with far less innocent ideas. His narrowed eyes, obscured by bushy eyebrows and face hidden by shadows, he is in every way opposite to the young woman in his arms. Here, Renoir employs contrast to demonstrate each character's purity of lack thereof."
