From the Paper:

"The Learned Women was produced following three or four years of work on the part of Moliere, and not unlike his other works, was received with much acclaim and opposition. The immediate effect of The Learned Women was to expose the reality that women were not in fact the objects that society at the time had cornered them into at the time. The plot of The Learned Women, as will be explained, was one of struggle, between established female societal roles and those women who are not willing to accommodate them for the sake of tradition, unwilling to forsake happiness and love."
