"The Joy Luck Club is a story of the mother and daughter relationships of a group of Chinese women who have been transplanted to America and raised their daughters in a very different culture than they were raised. June is the main character and we learn of her relationship with her mother, Suyuan, through her eyes. Suyuan, had a very traumatic past. She lived through the war in China, lost her husband to the war, and then was forced to abandon her twin daughters, but she was a strong willed woman who refused to focus on her hardships, and was determined to create happiness and success where she found it lacking. Mrs. Zehnder suffered childhood traumas, but rather than making her strong, it made her weak. She turned to alcohol and drugs, and never developed any motherly instincts."
