Paper Summary:

This paper examines how "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" is a poignant story describing Ellen Weatherall, the aging granny, as she travels through her twilight years. Granny Weatherall only believed that she would live to be sixty because she felt that her life was over; instead, to her surprise, she lived to be eighty. In particular, it looks at how the story closely parallels the life of Jesus Christ.

From the Paper:

"Granny's tragedy in her life was, like all of her life, in the past. Granny was jilted at the altar by George, and this has caused her much unforgotten pain during her whole life. "Granny's heart was broken once and for all". Mooney states that "Granny Weatherall feels not the whole of her life within her, but only its greatest pain. It is her lost lover whom she sees most clearly, and the awful hurt he caused her which she feels so deeply". (49) This thought closely parallels Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice allowed everyone to be free from sin. Christians cause Him great sadness through sin filled lives, but Jesus is always able to forgive."
