Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the gilded age in America. The paper focuses on a small number of events, persons and changes that truly made this period in American history unique. The paper suggests that this time represented a time in American history when the morals and conformities of the past were shrugged off and replaced with openness, optimism,
disillusionment and prosperity.
From the Paper:
"The American revolt against these outdated and outmoded conventions began in the big cities and major campuses located in the Northeast, and from there, slowly trickled down and into the Deep South. This revolt took many forms, particularly in regards to culture and art. For instance, American women dared public disapproval by using makeup, wearing revealing clothing and giving up the traditional full-bodied, one-piece bathing suit for skimpier swimming attire; skirts, which had been fixed at a modest angle length for decades, gradually became shorter until, by 1927, they had reached the knees."
