The driver is a victim, Sagan points out. "Our cultural motifs, our educational system, our communications media had failed this man." The reader is now aware of the author's character, and his words may carry increased value. This will lend validity to future argument and proofs put forth by the author. The remainder of the introduction reinforces the precarious state ignorance that characterizes "95 percent of Americans.""
