It is no coincidence that this was also the day on which The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was officially implemented. So as the President of Mexico, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, was celebrating what he considered the greatest achievement of his administration, the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) began its war against that very government which Salinas represented. And the world was watching."
