Paper Summary:

This paper discusses Thomas Hardy's character of Tess, and Nethaniel Hawthorne's character of Hester in literature. It further analyzes whether these characters were tragic or triumphant heroines. The paper uses research to clarify that Hester is a triumphant character in the literary drama, and that Tess is a tragic character. One heroine succumbs to the world, and the other succeeds in spite of it.

From the Paper:

"Heroes and heroines in literature are often subjected to tragic moments, or tragic ends. Characters that struggle against the oppositions in life, then, through knowledge, overcome tragedies are those that remain triumphant. Yet, characters that may appear strong, but allow the tragic elements in their lives to overtake their spirit ultimately become tragic heroes or heroines because they eventually loose their struggle in the end. Nathaniel Hawthorne created the character of Hester in his book, The Scarlet Letter. Hester is a woman that has committed the sin of adultery, and within the timeframe of the book this is one of the greatest sins a woman can be accused of. Through the ridicule of the town, her family, and her entire world, Hester is subjected to events that continuously beckon her to give in to the condemnation that has been cast upon her."
