"In William Faulkner's story, "A Rose for Emily," we see a woman face more challenges as time goes by and, as a result, become negatively affected by those challenges. Emily Grierson becomes more reclusive, distant, and strange with the passage of time. In the end, we find that she was nothing less than crazy. She is a quiet and reserved individual at the beginning of the story but she changes as life throws more traumatic events toward her. She cannot cope and this inability to cope leads to her mental instability. Emily's instability becomes worse because she does not get out of the house and she does not accept change easily. Death and change are two things that drive Emily out of her mind."
