"The Cask of Amontillado"
A critical analysis of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado".
933 words (approx. 3.7 pages) | 0 sources | 2009

Paper Summary:

The paper focuses on Edgar Allan Poe's intense use of symbolism and irony throughout his work, "The Cask of Amontillado." The paper describes the irony and deceit in the story and then shows how the work also contains many symbolic events or objects.

From the Paper:

"From the very beginning, irony is seen in the story. Montresor's enemy's name is Fortunato which has a literal meaning of a man with good fortune or luck. However, the truth is that he isn't going to be fortunate because he is going to be tricked and be done away with by his own "friend." Also, the setting is ironic in its self. The carnival is where the characters meet up. A carnival is where you're supposed to be celebrating and having fun. However, in the story it is portrayed as a time for ultimate revenge and death. The setting changes drastically when the two characters leave the happiness of the carnival for the dark and gothic catacombs under Montresor's family estate. It is learned that when the narrator meets Fortunato, he is drunk and is dressed in a ridiculous costume. Fortunato's costume foreshadows that since he's dressed like a fool, he's going to be playing the part of the fool."
