Paper Summary:
The paper first outlines the story "The Bread Givers" where a young Jewish woman disowned her family to live independent of her overbearing father. The paper then looks at the film "Hester Street" where a Jewish immigrant, Jake, divorced his wife and married an American woman who would not embarrass him with her culture. The paper brings out how in both works, the main characters were forced to deal with cultural intolerance and prejudice from people close to them. The paper asserts that these two works do an excellent job of portraying what a Jewish immigrant had to deal with when he entered America, as well as what current immigrants have to face.
From the Paper:
"The Bread Givers and Hester Street are two important works because they examine the lives of two different sets of Jewish immigrants into the United States. In both situations, there is a culture clash that causes the main characters to go through a change that greatly impacts the outcome of their lives. Moving from one culture into another culture is a very difficult thing for anyone, and these two works show how much can change in such a short period of time. For Sara, it led to her disowning her family and living for life on her own, independent of her overbearing father. For Jake, it led to him divorcing his wife and marrying an American woman who would not embarrass him with her culture. These two works do an excellent job of portraying what a Jewish immigrant had to deal with during this time period and also what current immigrants have to deal with as well."
