The Bible on Personal Conduct

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses how the Bible provides many teachings that still have relevance in today's world. However, it is important to look beyond the Bible for additional moral guidelines that can direct human behavior on issues that were not present in the time of the early Christians. The paper contends that it is possible to use the teachings of the Bible, however, to provide a foundation upon which to build a strong moral structure that is built both on theology and on the demands of the modern world.

"The Bible provides a record of the cultures and some events that took place in the ancient world, giving us insight into the lives of Jews and early Christians at that time. Although scientists may dispute the actual occurrence of some of these events, that does not negate the value of the Bible. The Bible is a guideline for living by a moral code. Unfortunately, even when the Bible is treated as being the Word of God, it can be difficult to apply it to modern life. In part, this difficulty comes from the differences between modern and ancient lives--the ancients did not have television to contend with, for example. A second difficulty that comes with using the Bible as an ethical guide in the modern world is the tendency that human beings have to manipulate written text to their advantage."
