"The first component of Malcolm X's life and perspective can be traced to his childhood, as he went by the name of Malcolm Little. Young Malcolm was the son of a Baptist preacher and a follower of Marcus Garvey. He was raised in a hostile environment and observed the strong hatred of white racists towards his family. Alex Haley named the chapter of Malcolm's childhood "Nightmare."
