"This did not end the effects of the conflict within the United States. On October 17, OPEC countries had met and agreed to impose an oil embargo on the United States and American allies for its intervention against Egypt and Syria. This increased oil prices in the United States by seventy percent. The U.S. was hit by a severe recession. New York harbor was suddenly filled with oil tankers that were in no hurry to dock since their shipment would be worth more the longer they waited, and gas lined snaked around the block as people waited to fuel up."
